Rape and Other Forms of Sexual Assault

Victims of sexual assault and rape include women, men, teens and children. These victims' suffering is not adequately addressed by the criminal prosecution of the perpetrators of sex crimes. The physical, mental, and emotional trauma following a rape can have severe and long-lasting repercussions in a victim's life, as well as for the victim's family.

At the law firm of Deitch & Rogers, LLC, we understand what victims of rape and other forms of sexual assault are experiencing. If you've been raped or sexually assaulted, contact one of our attorneys as soon as possible to maximize your legal rights.

After a Rape

A victim of rape or a similar crime may experience depression, rage, fear, and anxiety. The rapist may have been a stranger to the victim, or he (or she) may have been an acquaintance, a professional trusted by the victim, a family member, or someone with whom the victim was on a date. Each of these scenarios carries with it a unique set of detrimental effects on a victim. Potential outcomes of being sexually assaulted include:

  • Inability to concentrate or work, and subsequent loss of employment
  • Loss of income
  • Withdrawal from school
  • Significant medical bills
  • Bills for psychological counseling

In addition, many sexual assaults are coupled with physical force by the attacker that causes the victim further injuries.

Georgia Law Regarding Rape and Other Sex Crimes

The Georgia criminal code has strict definitions and punishments for rape and similar crimes, including:

  • Sexual Battery, including aggravated sexual battery
  • Sexual Assault
  • Statutory Rape
  • Sodomy, including aggravated sodomy
  • Child molestation

Rape is one of the few gender-specific crimes in the Georgia criminal code. Based on the code's language, rape can only be committed by a male against a female: the statute defines rape as the carnal knowledge of a female (that is, any penetration of the female sex organ by the male sex organ) forcibly and against her will.
